Creating folders in SharePoint 2013 lists and libraries

This article describes how to create a new folder in a Sharepoint list or a library. Folders is a most commonly used feature to sort your documents. It is an easiest way to work with a big amounts of documents.

Creating a new folder in a Sharepoint 2013 library

  1. First, you need to login to your Sharepoint site and open your Document library. In our example it is called “Document Library – Sample”

  2. Click Files tab from the ribbon, then click New Folder

  3. Enter the name for the new folder. In our example it is called “Sample Folder”

  4. Now you can see your new folder in the Document Library

  5. Just click on the folders name to open it

  6. Now you can add documents to the folder or create a new document

Creating a new folder in the Sharepoint 2013 list

  1. Open your Sharepoint list. In our example it is called “Sample List”

  2. Click Items tab from the ribbon, then click New Folder (if this option is grayed out, please refer to the end of this article)

  3. Enter the name for the new folder. In our example it is called “Sample Folder”

  4. Now you can see your new folder in the Sharepoint list

  5. Just click on the folders name to open it

  6. Now you can add new items to the folder or create a new item directly from the list

Enabling the “New Folder” option

  1. Open your Sharepoint list. Click List tab from the ribbon, then click List Settings

  2. Click Advanced Settings

  3. Find Folders section in the list, and click yes. Then click Ok.

Now you should be able to create a new folder in the Sharepoint list
