Adding, editing and removing list and library columns

One of the important things you should know about Sharepoint lists and libraries is the ability to customize them according to your requirements.

In these articles we will fe out how to add, edit or remove list and library columns.

You can add various types of columns to the list or a library or you can remove a column from being displayed in a list or a library view.

Add, edit and remove library columns

This article describes how to add, edit and remove library colums

Add new column to a document library

  1. Open your Sharepoint Library. In our example it is called “Document Library – Sample”

  2. Click Library from the ribbon, then click Create column, enter the column name and select the column type, then click Ok. In our case we’ve created the column named “Sample”

  3. Now we can see our new column in the library

Edit the column in the library

  1. Open your Sharepoint Library

  2. Click Library from the ribbon, click Library Settings

  3. Find “columns” option in the list and click on our “Sample” column name

  4. Change the column name to Sample-New, and click Ok

  5. Now you can see the new column name in our library

Remove the column from the library view

  1. Open your Sharepoint Library

  2. Click Library from the ribbon, click modify view

  3. Find Columns option from the list, as you can see it contains 3 columns: Display, Column Name, Position from left.
  4. Let me say some words about these columns
     a.   Display – hide/show the column in list view
     b.   Column Name – the name of the column
     c.   Position – the number of the column from the left side of the screen
  1. Uncheck the “Display” field from “Modify By” column and change the “Position from left” to 1 for “Sample-New” column

  2. Click Ok
  3. Open your library, as you can see the “Sample-New” column is now #1 column, and the “Modify By” column was removed from the view

In this article I will show you how to add, remove or edit list columns.

Add new column to a SharePoint list

  1. Open your Sharepoint List. In our example it is called “Sample-List”

  2. Click Library from the ribbon, then click Create column, enter the column name and select the column type, then click Ok. In our case we’ve created the column named “Sample”

  3. Now we can see our new column in the library

Edit the column in the list

  1. Open your Sharepoint list

  2. Click List from the ribbon, click List Settings

  3. Find “columns” option in the list and click on our “Sample” column name

  4. Change the column name to “Sample-New”, and click Ok

Remove the column from the List view

  1. Open your Sharepoint List

  2. Click List from the ribbon, click modify view

  3. Find Columns option from the list, as you can see it contains 3 columns: Display, Column Name, Position from left
 Let me say some words about these columns:
     a.   Display – hide/show the column in list view

  1. Check the “Display” field for the “Created By” column and change the “Position from left” to 1 for the “Sample-New” column

  1. Click Ok
  2. Open your list, as you can see the “Sample-New” column is now #1 column, and the “Created By” column was added to the view
